China’s economy is not immune to the influence of the global economic crisis. As China’seconomy is heavily dependent on global trade and investment flows, the global economicslowdown has already had a negative impact on China’s export sector and industries. Thereare some observations that our economy is alreadyslowing down. In response, many scholarscall on Chinese people to spend more money to create domestic demands in various magazinesand newspapers. They even equal consumption with being patriotic. In my point ofview, weshould hold the strings of purse tight, instead of spending more.

Firstly, as even some economic big shots acknowledge that they can not see the bottom of theglobal economic crisis, we should get prepared by holding the strings of our purse tight incase that the crisis lasts longer than anticipated. In terms of traditions, Chinese people haveformed the habit of saving money for long-term consideration. While many foreigners accuseChinese of being conservative, it is time-honored wisdom to save money for emergencies inthe future.

As a matter of fact, many foreign countries are characterized by their advanced welfaresystems, so that they can still make their needs meet in times of crisis. In China, while weadmit that the government has made progress in the establishment of social securitysystems, there are still many members of our society that are not included in social securitysystems. Therefore, it is impractical to call on those excluded members of the social securitysystems to spend more money.

Secondly, though Chinese people earn more money than before in the aggregate, themajority of us still do not amass enough wealth to live a guaranteed life. According to thelatest release of national incomes, urban citizens earn a per capita income of 15, 781 yuanwhile people in the rural areas earn only 4, 761 yuan. However, we must bear in mind thatwealth amassed by relatively limited number of millionaires and billionaires contribute a largeshare of the per capita income growth. Many people in the rural areas and those laid-off andunemployed workers can not even earn an average income. I think everyone wants to live aluxurious life, but without enough money how can they make it?

To sum up, in a time of economic slowdown, we should hold the strings of our purse tight sothat we can tide ourselves over in case of it is impractical to call on spendingmore when China is still a developing country. As an alternative, I think we can boycottexports of foreign goods so that we can still create domestic demands.

In some countries, teenagers have jobs while they are still students. Do you think this is a good idea? Support your opinion by using specific reasons and details.

In many countries it is common for teenagers to take part-time jobs while they are still in high school, while in other societies this is virtually unheard of. In the latter situation, students are expected to spend all of their time on their studies and consider schoolwork their xxxjobxxx. In my opinion, students benefit more from a more balanced lifestyle, which may include working at a part-time job. Therefore, I believe that it is a good idea for students to work while studying.

While it is true that a student’s most important goal must be to learn and to do well at his studies, it does not need to be the only goal. In fact, a life which consists of only study is not balanced and may cause the student to miss out on other valuable learning experiences. In addition to bringing more balance to a student’s life, part-time work can broaden his range of experience. He will have the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life and will be faced with a wider variety of problems to solve. Furthermore, work helps a student to develop greater independence, and earning his own pocket money can teach him how to handle his finances. Finally, a part-time job can help a student to develop a greater sense of responsibility, both for his own work and for that of the team he works with.

For all of these reasons, I firmly believe that most students would benefit from taking a part-time job while they are in high school. Of course, they must be careful not to let it take up too much of their time because study is still their primary responsibility. In sum, living a balanced life is the best way to be successful.

Should Fireworks Be Allowed for Spring Festival Celebrations?

Sample1

Fireworks Shouldn’t Be Allowed for Spring Festival Celebrations

During the Spring Festival, Chinese people festoon their houses with paper scrolls and let off firecrackers to greet the arrival of the new year. Some Chinese believe Spring Festival would never be the same without fireworks. However, I agree with those who hold the opposite view. Fireworks should be banned for safety and environmental reasons. The cost of human life far outweighs maintaining festival tradition. The ways to celebrate traditional festivals can also be modernized and updated along with the rapid development of high technology.

On the one hand, lighting of firecrackers has caused serious injuries and air pollution, which casts shadow over the joyous ambiance. Statistics show that from October 2003 to February 2004, the injury and death toll caused by Spring Festival fireworks in Beijing hit 307 and four respectively. Illegal fireworks, shoddy fireworks and fireworks falling short of environment-friendly standards were respectively 147 percent, 120 percent and 100 percent up over the quantity of the previous year. According to a doctor, every year hospitals see a surge of two kinds of emergency cases when Spring Festival arrives. One is indigestion caused by overeating while the other is firework-related eye injuries. Various forms of fireworks-related pollution, including noise, smoke, dust pollution, and paper wrapping pollution, all pose potential danger to people’s health.

On the other hand, our adoption of traditional culture should be based on a critical approach. Although letting off firecrackers is part of Chinese tradition, it is haphazard and perilous with many disadvantages, such as wasting resources, pollution and safety risks. In fact, the effects of a ban on fireworks are quite obvious. We do want joviality for the celebration, but do we also want clean air for our health and safety guarantee for thousands of families? Gradually, the public will recognize the benefits of the ban and develop some clean and pollution-free ways of celebration.

The importance of safety and clean air is definitely greater than observation of a festival tradition. Therefore, a long-term ban should be under way for the well being of the general public. We will have a greater time for Spring Festival with safety and clean air instead of fireworks.

Some people are committed to their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals. What is guiding them is a kind of illusion. Some people think that illusion is good for success while others argue that it is not so good because it may get people unrealistic. As far as I am concerned, illusion is necessary in our life only if it is encouraging and realistic.

There are several reasons.First of all, there is power in illusion. The illusion can lead people to the path they want to go on and it gives us passion. We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses so that we can find pleasure in the fragrance of backyard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, and the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. The illusion can be enthusiastic love of life that puts sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.

Secondly, we are born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant’s delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlike wonder and illusion that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, no matter how old they are. For example, the famous cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. Music, for him, was an elixir that made life a never-ending adventure. As author and poet Samuel once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”

Lastly, people with illusions also love what they do, regardless of money or power or title. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as do a part-time vocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons and the executive who handcrafts furniture. We cannot afford to waste tears and energy and time on “might-have-beens”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.

To sum up, God gives each bird its food, but he does not throw it into its nest. Wherever you want to go, just cherish your precious illusion and let your dream be realized.
